Some songs arrive months after they are written. “Atlas” took a very different road.
Long before Guns N’ Roses officially released the track in December 2025, it belonged to the sprawling history of the Chinese Democracy era. Back then, the song was known as “Atlas Shrugged” — one of several recordings that existed around the project but never made the final album.
Its existence wasn’t exactly a secret. Axl Rose discussed “Atlas Shrugged” publicly during his online fan conversations in 2008, while former Guns N’ Roses A&R executive Tom Zutaut also recalled the track when speaking about the difficult Chinese Democracy sessions.
But “Atlas” remained outside the official catalogue.
Over the years, it became part of the mythology surrounding the enormous archive of unreleased Guns N’ Roses material. By 2019, recordings connected to “Atlas Shrugged” had also surfaced publicly, giving fans another glimpse of a song that still had no official release.
Then, decades after its origins, the waiting finally ended.
On December 3, 2025, Guns N’ Roses officially released “Atlas” alongside “Nothin’”, introducing material with roots in an earlier chapter of the band to a completely different era.
For most songs, release day is the beginning of their story.
For “Atlas”, it was the end of a very long journey.
